Men and Therapy

Picture

Greg Meyer, M.A., L.P.

Men will many times experience heightened levels of emotion during major transitional stages in their lives. These emotions tend to be experienced as overwhelming and can affect one’s ability to function in personal relationships and at work.

During times of emotional stress, many men tend to isolate. They may withdraw from family and friends. Sometimes they will resort to compulsive behaviors such as drinking, working long hours, gambling or promiscuous sexual behavior.

The extent of response when approached by concerned individuals is: "It’s no big deal!" End of conversation. Yet prolonged experiences of high stress levels may precipitate anxiety, depression or the beginning of an addiction.
Psychotherapy, the "talk" therapy, can teach coping methods, assist with insight and, when needed, integrate a prescribed medication in the person's treatment plan. If group therapy is recommended, this process may facilitate even further insight and enhance the healing process.

A physical exam by the client’s primary doctor and an assessment of his emotional health are a starting point to determine the course of whatever therapy is recommended.
